OUR PROJECTS

Trees Project

Naretoi project decided to plant trees because the natural forest is getting finished due to Deforestion or falling of trees. We came up with this idea of planting trees to prevent the effect of climate change in the Masai community and worldwide. The effects of climate change have mostly affected the Masai community because 80% of them are not educated, which means they are not employed or get any other means of sustaining their family needs during the drought season. We train our community to know the importance of planting trees to save our mother earth to stay green and be a better place to live. Soil erosion is one of the biggest reason of naretoi project started to plant trees in the community, simply because this has affect a big area of Masai land, and this is because people are cutting trees with no replacement of another tree. Due to a lack of trees, wild animals run away from their habitant because they don’t have a place to hide anymore.

Education

Many maasai girls are not attending to school because of a lack of income, and also because schools are far away from their home villages. Naretoi project is aiming at helping those young kids whose parents are not able to send them to school. In Maasai tradition, they believe that if you send girls to school, they will not come back to their families and give back to the community, and they will not bring the advantages to their families because they will be married to the other Bomas. This means they forget that every child has the right to get an education

Enterpreneurialship

In 2015, I came up with the idea of starting a project to help families get at least 2 meals a day and the most basic needs for them. I prioritized making a women’s project because, since my childhood, women have been facing challenges when it comes to taking care of the families when you compare it with the men. Women have been taking on all the responsibilities in most of the families in my community, despite the fact that they do not have anywhere to get money. I thought that starting this project would support the majority of women to get some money for buying food, paying school fees for their children, and providing the families with the most needed things. The aim of the Naretoi project on starting an entrepreneurship is to make sure that women are able to depend on themselves and be able to hold their families. In this project. The women in this group meet every Friday of the week to talk about the financial management, and they also they make table mats and necklaces, which is the source for them to make money to sustain their family. Some women in this group have started small businesses like buying and selling maize in every market and gaining profit for the project as well as themselves. This group of women is able to give loans to those people who are contacting small businesses and bring back with an interest at the end of the day.

Farming Project

Why do we farm
The Maasai community depends on farming and keeping the livestock because this is the only way the maasai community to earn money instead of farming as well as keeping the livestock so they can sell the crop after harvesting, and also they can sell the livestock in case.

Female Genital mutilation

Naretoi is going to educate the Masai community about Female Genital mutilation effects. Since we grew up we have heard about EMURATA Ooh Intoye which means woman circumcision. Due to the maasai history, EMURATA started in the 15th century in believing that when the woman gets circumcised, then they reduce Prostitution. Women are getting circumcised because people still believe that when the woman is not circumcised, she is dirty, she will not get married, she has no value to the community, and those girls are discriminated against by the community. Those girls have no right to decide for themselves, and they have no right to make a decision for their own body. The reason Why naretoi is fighting against FGM? Since my childhood, I have been experiencing many Women suffering from bleeding and sometimes losing their lives because of Circumcision. Many Women are having a hard time while giving birth because of the removal of clitoris.

How does Naretoi fight against FGM? Since 2015, naretoi have tried to educate people about the
effects of female genital mutilation. Naretoi makes a voice for those girls who were forced to get circumcised and also for girls to take care of one another. Engamuratani is the Women who
circumcised the girls, and she uses the same razor bladder for all girls with no protection like
wearing gloves or hygienic measures.
WHO estimates that more than 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone femalegenital mutilation in the countries where the practice is concentrated. In addition, every year an estimated 3 million girls are at risk of undergoing female genital mutilation, the majority of whom are cut before they turn 15 years old. FGM has no health benefits. It can lead to immediate health risks as well as long-term complications to women’s physical, mental and sexual health and well-being.
